Why stainless is different.

The three widely used materials for molds are ceramic, fiber and stainless steel. These stainless steel forms last forever, where ceramic or fiber will crack over time. They also have a faster heat up and cool down time due to the low weight or mass as compared to ceramic forms. Although it is difficult to apply shelf primer to regular stainless steel metal molds especially when new, we have treated the surface of our molds to make the kiln wash stick easier!

The 4 reasons why our stainless steel forms are different.

1. We treated both the inside and outside surfaces so it has a rough matte finish. This makes the kiln wash stick to the surface! If you have ever tried to coat a slick stainless steel surface, we know you will like this feature.
2. We found these bowl forms without the usual steep sides. The problem with very steep sided stainless steel bowl forms is that your glass usually falls into the mold uneven, making your finished piece uneven. A tip to using steep forms is to use a form one size larger so the cut piece of glass fits half way down into the form. Then reslump the piece in a smaller form if you want a deeper bowl. The second tip is to put the steep sided molds in the center of your kiln to get as much even heating as possible!
3. The bottoms have a circular ridge which prevents the finished glass piece from rocking.
4. We have put air vent holes in the bottom to prevent trapped air which causes bubbles.
