Tungsten Rods with Handle
Tungsten rods : high temperature metal for manipulating glass by dragging, raking, feathering, or swirling the molten glass. Tungsten is an amazing high temperature metal, which unlike stainless steel, is less likely to melt or burn up in the flame and is less likely to stick to the glass. An ideal metal to manipulate glass by dragging, raking, feathering, or swirling the surface. Can be used to make air bubbles, poke out unwanted air bubbles or poke holes through the glass. Available as a straight sharpened rod or with the end bent for easier raking.

Rod Cutter

Glass rod cutters for cutting glass rods easily and cleanly.
These vinyl coated rod cutters are great for cutting glass rods, from thin to 1/2" thick.

Wheel style cutters have round cutting wheels that can be turned as they get dull. The advantage of this over the green handled ones is that it cuts a cleaner cut which doesn't really matter unless you are cutting murrini chips. A must if you will be cutting murrini chips.

Green handled cutters are carbide tipped. 7-1/2" long. Advantage of this over the wheeled cutter is that it is 'quicker" to use, grab and cut without much aiming between the cutting blades.

Paddles

Paddles for shaping molten glass for the hot glass artist. These hand held paddles are used to shape molten glass. The extra long
handles are rubber coated for comfort. Remember, do not put this or any tool directly into the flame, work and shape your glass out of the flame.

Careful - Some other suppliers out there are selling paddles that have grainy,
unsanded pads and weak handles. Our paddle, that we manufacture, are fine sanded and made with a higher quality graphite. We also test our handles
to be sure they are strong.

Graphite marvering paddle with a hole in the corner to help hold steady the hot end of the mandrel. *This paddle has a hole in the corner. To help hold or steady the hot end of the mandrel, put the end of your mandrel into this hole while turning.

Shaping Paddles
These hand held paddles are used to shape molten glass. Extra long handles are rubber coated for comfort and have shaped edges to better shape your molten glass. Available in graphite or brass. Graphite is the preferred because it is lighter and can be re-sanded. Where the brass is a more durable material and it is easier to keep the chiseled edge intact. Remember, do not put this or any tool directly into the flame, work and shape your glass out of the flame.

The Wedgie - The forward edge is tapered to a sharp chiseled point. This allows you to cut into the molten glass to make a groove. A typical use for this is to make a melon shaped bead.

The Basic Shaper - Chiseled edge plus one side edge is rounded for additional shaping.
Available in graphite or brass.

Super Shaper - Sometimes called the Stump Shaper. Similar to the Basic Shaper but with additional ground shapes. Available in graphite or brass.

Glass Shears

Tool used to cut glass when it is molten. Cut excess glass off the lip of a vessel, or when removing glass from a crucible kiln, cut the trailing edge of the dripping molten glass with these shears. You have more control with the small shears because your hand is closer to the blades but might be two close to the molten glass for comfort. Depends on what you are doing with the shear. Why not get all sizes. The Gold colored handle pair is not only pretty but the blades are better machined and have a smoother action.

Cooling Your Glass

There are three ways to help cool your glass slowly to help prevent thermal shocking or breaking.
  1. Kiln
  2. Crockpot full of hot vermiculite
  3. Two Fiber Pads
To use, place your hot glass between these pads as soon as you are done with it on the torch. The pads hold the heat to slow down the cooling rate. The timing for placing the glass between the fiber is critical. If you place them to soon, when the glass surface is still molten, fibers may stick to the glass. If you wait to long, the glass may cool to much and the risk of breaking is greater. Experiment with the timing. Fiber supplied 2 sizes. Remember only a kiln or flame annealing can anneal glass. Crockpot full of hot vermiculite to ease the cooling of hot sculptures like glass beads. Cooling off hot beads that are still attached to mandrels by placing them between fiber blanket pads.
