There Are Three Basic Types of Glasses

Enhanced Didymium As the name implies, these are enhanced Didymium (we carry 202ACE) glass working glasses. These lenses block bright yellow flare, but not much UV and no IR. Most soft glass beadmakers use these filtering lenses. You may require additional UV and IR protection, but this is your call. If you do, we recommend the Green ACE IR glasses to the right. IR Shade 2, 3 or 5 These block UV and IR rays, but not the yellow flare; you'll still need didymium lense glasses for that. Most borosilicate hard glass workers use lenses that filter all three; yellow flare, UV and IR. We have three ways to add UV and IR protection to your didymium glasses.   1) Clip on lenses - see above picture. These clip ons are listed further down this page.  2) Fit over glasses - large frames that fit over other glasses. See further down this page for more about these. 3) Or use the Green ACE IR - Pictured in the column to the right. These lenses block UV rays, IR rays and solar flare.	Green ACE IR (Formerly Boroscopes)  The superior Green ACE IR lenses combine the  protective properties of Phillips 202ACE didymium lenses and the IR shade 2, 3 and 5 welding lenses to offer complete protection against solar flare, UV rays and IR rays. These lenses are also available in split lense glasses, with Enhanced Didymium (202ACE) on top for better vision and Green ACE IR on bottom for more protection.   WOW! .

What's the difference between Shade 2, 3 or 5? Click Here to see a chart of the differences. You will notice minimal difference in UV and IR protection between shades but you will notice reduced visibility as the shade darkens. The higher a shade number, the darker the shade is.

These are not Didymiums. Usually used in combination with the didymium glasses shown above in the left column on this page. Using the below glasses is an inexpensive way to add more protection to the above didymiums. It is common for people working with borosilicate glass, (when the flame is extra bright, or when fuming metals onto the glass) to use the below glass in conjunction with the above didymium. The below glasses provides good UV and IR protection that Didymiums do not provide. If you are not as much concerned about cost, then do not use these. Use the glasses in the above right hand column, the Green ACE IR's. They do everything.

The higher the shade number, the darker the lens, which makes for less visibility. The higher the shade number, the more UV and IR protection. The 940 didymium glasses (which are further up the page) will fit inside these glasses, along with other types. Unfortunately the inexpensive 9301's do not fit in this frame. More about GreenACE IR (formerly Boroscopes) Green ACE IR are designed to meet the need for the extra UV and IR protection needed when working on borosilicate glass. Green ACE IR are specially formulated glass filter lenses that the manufacture exclusively owns. These lenses have been developed for the lampworking and glassblowing markets. This revolutionary product is dramatically lighter than conventional laminated products and comes in a full coverage lens which is a higher quality design because there are no areas without shading. Green ACE IR should be worn when working on hard glass projects where regular didymium lenses are not adequate due to the fact of insufficient filtration of ultra violet and infrared absorption.
